The Board of Supervisors approved an estimated $150,000 contract this week with retired sheriff’s Chief Robert Spierer, a candidate for Santa Clarita City Council, to review reports of child abuse and excessive force in the county’s youth lockups. Spierer will be paid an hourly rate, amounting to a maximum $150,000 a year for up to three years, under the terms of the contract unanimously approved Tuesday by Los Angeles County supervisors. The move comes at the recommendation of a federal monitor working to reform the Probation Department after complaints of abuse surfaced at youth probation camps and the higher security juvenile halls. Spierer, a former captain at the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station, was rejected this year in his quest for an open seat on the City Council, then announced plans in March he would run in the April 2008 election.last_img read more
