Bolt thanks fans after Laureus success

first_imgJamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt thanked his fans for their support after yesterday becoming the joint most successful Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award winner, following his latest Olympic domination. Bolt, who won gold medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m, followed up on his successes in 2013, 2010 and 2009 to join tennis great Roger Federer as the men with the most Laureus Sportsman of the Year awards, with four each. The Jamaican got the nod at yesterday’s ceremony in Monaco over a field that included fellow track star Mo Farah, tennis player Andy Murray, football star Cristiano Ronaldo, and basketball standouts LeBron James and Stephen Curry. The ceremony took place at the Salle des Etoiles, Sporting Monte Carlo. “I wish to thank the (Laureus World Sports) academy for this award and I want to thank the fans for continuing to believe in me and for their support,” said Bolt after receiving his award. “Believe in your dreams and do not think limits. Remember, anything is possible. I was just a youth from Jamaica and I’m now recognised as one of the greatest athletes in the world. “It’s all about believing in your dreams and working hard,” Bolt added. Jamaica’s Olympic star Elaine Thompson, who won double gold in Rio, lost out in the Sportswoman of the Year award race to American gymnast Simone Biles, who won four gold medals at the Games. The Chicago Cubs won the Team of the Year nod, with Formula One star Nico Rosberg claiming the Breakthrough of the Year Award. Swimmer Michael Phelps won the Comeback of the Year, while English Premier League champions Leicester City won the Spirit of Sport award.last_img read more
